The difficulties with language encountered by some children with hearing loss who have implants are still unexplained for around 13% of this demographic.
These problems could be caused by language difficulties that are independent of hearing loss, as is seen with some children who have hearing, or by anomalies in the auditory processing of language sounds that are related to hearing loss.
To explore these hypotheses, Céline David, under the supervision of Professor Marie Gomot, will compare the language capacities and brain responses of children with hearing loss and with or without language difficulties to those of children with good hearing with or without language problems.
In this way, a better understanding of the origin of these language difficulties will make it possible to suggest treatments better adapted to these children’s needs, so that they can obtain the best results.
