To understand language, the brain must extract speech-related information from the continuous flow of sound provided by the ears.

To understand these phenomena, Dr. Ludovic Bellier will work in Professor Knight’s laboratory, recording brain activity during speech processing with a cutting-edge neuroimaging technique used in patients with neurological disorders: high-density electrocorticography (ECoG). ECoG involves recording brain activity using electrodes. With unparalleled spatial and temporal precision, this approach will enable the scientists to define how speech is processed by the brain.

This kind of exploration would radically change care for patients with hearing loss by leading to the development of new hearing implants improving speech perception and could have an impact on patients with aphasia or other forms of language impairment.
